I'm having a problem sending files. I do have a router (linksys version
1.04.8; v3) and so when I send a file to someone it's going very very slow.
I've lookd on google.com and here for a solution, which ports to open, but no
answer. I'd be very glad if someone could help me.

Thank you very much!

Non-UPnP Firewalls:
Very few options exist for using the advanced features of Windows
Messenger with a non-UPnP firewall. Points to consider on this topic
include:

Peers on the same side of the firewall can use all of the features of
Windows Messenger.

• IM and Presence will work through most firewall configurations.

• To support AV in both directions through the firewall, all UDP ports
between 5004 and 65535 must be opened to allow signaling (SIP) and media
streams (RTP) to traverse the firewall. This is required because dynamic
ports are used. AS and WB also use dynamic ports for signaling.

• FT can be enabled by opening ports 6891 to 6900 on the firewall.
Remote Assistance can be enabled by opening port 3389.

You could try to forward port 6891 -> 6900 to your contacts internal IP
and see if that changes anything, or you could DMZ his machine if that
is possible, just to test if that changes anything.

Mmm... And I've seen an Option, that you can have direct transfers on
Messenger, but It's greyed out...

Hi Sally,

That information is 5 years old and is only partly correct now. Messenger file transfers do
not use 6891-6900 for file transfer since 5.x., they use a dynamic range, just like
audio/video and require UPnP for direct connections across NATs (routers, etc.)
