port question

Hi,

I got several computers connected via a hub, to my speedtouch 510 modem.
The port forwarding i like to do myself with NAPT settings option in the
modem.

All these computers have their own permanent (intern) Ip address, for
example:
10.0.0.aaa , 10.0.0.bbb , 10.0.0.ccc.
I would like to use WLM on all these computers, specially voice-chat and if
possible
video-chat as well.

What i still don't understand is, do i need to forward ports to realize
this?

When i had only one computer, i forwarded for example:
(internal Ip): port 6901 to (external Ip): port 6901 tcp
This was enough to have voice- or video chat.
But how about for the other computers? Some sites tell that there need to
be
openend more ports, like 5004 udp for videochat (msn)

Hope that someone can give me an idea how to configure this.

Thanks in advance,

heian

I have just checked pdf file for Speedtouch 510 info and it appears to
support UP&P so that you do not have to worry about port forwarding for
what you are trying to do. You may want to check if UP&P is enabled by
default, if it isn't it needs be turned on(UP&P of my router - not
Speedtouch - was turned off by default).

There are three options for UP&P:
full, secure, off

Full is enabled, so it should work like this.

But what i still don't understand, why is life messenger opening these ports
by itselfs,
and why i need to forward some ports of certain programs? (like eMule,
server programs,
remote programs) What is the difference with them and WLM ?
(ps, if this is to much OT, i will go to an other forum)

Thanks for the help anyway!

Some programs don't use UPnP, other times there are problems between the
router implementation of UPnP and the application implementation.

I have only used three programs which worked with UPnP, Windows Live
Messenger, BitTornado (a BitTorrent client), and uTorrent (a BitTorrent
client).

BitTornado had two options for UPnP: Fast and Slow. Only the "Slow" option
worked with my router. The uTorrent implementation of UPnP does not work
with my router at all.

In the end, because of published examples of exploits which allow
applications unauthorized access to port manipulation on the router, I chose
to disable UPnP on my router. If this breaks Windows Live Messenger, so be
it. I won't sacrifice the security of my router for the sake of convenience.
(My router does not offer a "secure" UPnP option; it is either "Enabled", or
"Disabled".)

The "secure" option locks down the UPnP commands to addition/deletion of ports and only to
the node requesting it (as opposed to allowing you to open ports to other PCs).

A lot of routers (at least the ones I've owned), haven't had a full and complete
implementation of UPnP in terms of an internet gateway device and were in a sort of "secure"
mode already just by virtue of the lack of functionality. But Messenger will work anyway,
just direct connection things will be more inconsistent.

Hi,

Just for some clarification with these ports, mainly because people search for this stuff.

6901 has not been used for Messenger since MSN Messenger 3.x.

There is a KB article on all the specific ports required, although Universal Plug and Play
(UPnP) will just open and forward them anyway. This information is really only good for
configuring software firewalls:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/927847

And yes, those are ranges in the article.

Hi Heian,

Glad I could be of assistance. It really bugs me that even some Microsoft sources are still
promoting the wrong ports -- and people wonder why it doesn't work.
