Port restricted NAT?

I went from Verizon DSL to Verizon FIOS service, got a new router, and not my
connection status in Windows Live Messenger shows as connected through a port
restricted NAT? Anyone know how to fix this, or what ports I need to open up
in the router? It's an Actiontec M1424WR router.

Trying to open up my port restricted NAT....these are my choices for types of
ports: TCP, UDP, ICMP, GRE, ESP, AH, other. I already have ports TCP
5000-65535 open, but what else do I need open (Windows Live Messenger
8.0.0812.00).

additional info.....windows live messenger is working (it was before i even
enabled plug and play and opened those ports i mentioned above in the
router), so will opening any more ports make the audio/video come in any
better? Or, if it's working, is opening ports not really accomplishing
anything?

Hi,

Without UPnP in the router, opening ports will do nothing. However, from a technical
standpoint you need UDP ports here, not TCP.

I admit I've not downloaded the manual yet to check, but there may be a bridging mode or
something similar in the router configuration.

i seem to have gotten the UPnP enabled, i just need a list of all the ports
(and type of each one/set of ports) to open up. Once I have the UPnP
enabled, and all the necessary ports open, should that show my status as
directly connected? Right now it's showing as connected through a "UPnP port
restricted NAT".

Hi,

Actually opening ports may stop it from working. As par of UPnP is the automatically opening
and forwarding the ports required and in fact manually doing so may break it from working
correctly.

From what you have displayed there, you're good to go.

After shutting my computer off last night, and turning it back on this
morning, now my connection status shows "connected through a UPnP firewall".
Is this a good connection, or is there anything else I need to do? I have
the router firewall set on the lowest setting (allow incoming and outgoing),
and am using software firewall McAfee Personal Firewall at standard setting
with UPnP port 5000 enabled.

If you are still being detected as UPnP Firewall, you most likely have a
problem with UDP packets. Check your NAT configuration to make sure you
didn't inadvertantly change your UDP settings.

There is nothing wrong with being detected as a "Port-Restricted" NAT.
Being "Port-Restricted" has nothing to do with what ports you have open. It
is just a way of describing a NAT that has a particular incoming packet
filtering rule.

For example:

If I'm behind a port-restricted NAT and I send a packet to IP1ort1, the
NAT will allow packets back to me from IP1ort2. However, if IP1ort2
sends something back to me, the NAT will block it.
