hey guys

does anyone know what ports to forward for windows live messenger 8

im using a linksys wrt54g

the ports for msn messenger are
1863 to 1863
6891 to 6900
6901 to 6901 (note i have written them like they appear on the router, if
anyone replies could they write them like this too please :-))

i dont know if the msn ports are the same as wlm, so im just checking, cz my
router is already triggering said ports.

thanks in advance

There's no need to really use port triggering/forwarding

As long as UPnP is enabled in the router, and the UPnP Framework exception
is enabled (if you are using Windows Firewall), UPnP will take care of it
all for you.

Greetings,

You need to use UPnP, just forwarding the ports won't really do anything.

Additionally, just so you know, 6891-6900 has not been used since MSN Messenger 5 and 6901
hasn't been used since MSN Messenger 3.

ok well ive tried enabling all UPnP things i can, but ive read on the net
something about NAT conflicting with it, i dont really understand, im pretty
good with PCs but this is my first "adventure" with the whole
router/networking thing.

i think NAT is what asigns all the IPs or something when each PC turns on.
so if i disabled this (if the router lets me somewhere) and assigned a
static IP to each PC should this then work???

thanks again, also i will get onto "portforward.com" as this is where i got
these ports from, so i think they need to update them.

does Network Address Server Setting (DCHP) have anything to do with this, if
i disabled this and assigned an IP to each PC would UPnP be effective then?

also thanks for getting back to me quickly guys.

ok i think i should explain the problem some more.

when i go on windows live messenger i get the little ballon saying "network
cable unplugged", now sometimes i can be on windows live messenger for ages
and its fine, others like the past few days it lets me sign in but as soon as
i type and send something i get "network cable unplugged" but it goes away
like after 2 or 3 seconds and the net is back on. its almost like the router
resets itself when i try and use WLM.
now it usually only when i type, but a few seconds ago i had only WLM open,
and i wasnt talking i was doing some reading of a book hence the reason i
wasnt doing anything, and it said "network cable unplugged"

ive been onto linksys about this alot, the first thing was to turn on UPnP
and it seemed like it worked for about a day, but then i went wierd again, so
got back to linksys and the guy said i would need to port trigger to get wlm
working. which has lead me here.

the router is excelent WRT54G v7 (firmware 7.00.1), but it just doesnt like
wlm or msn.

sorry for my lack of grammar and spelling etc.

also when i port trigger theres 2 fields to enter things in "triggering
range-start to end" and "forwarding range-start to end" i know what to put in
forwarding range, but i read on the net it doesnt matter what you put in
triggering, surely it should be the same as forwarding?????

thanks again

the WRT54G isn't that good of a router. in fact most linksys routers have
fallen into the very poor quality range. a known problem with the WRT54G is
UPnP not working correctly. though, i tried on a few different routers to get
the UPnP in msn to correctly forward... never any luck. even when it would
finally open the ports, mostly only for troubleshooting - would always forget
to close.

as for just port forwarding to specific ports, good luck with that if you
can find the correct ones and not using msn on multiple computers. as far as
i'm concerned, the file transfer in msn is bugged with all the network
translation tools. the best bet is to either try using trillian or ftp to
transfer.

or if you get really desperate, just set up a computer to be a proxy (e.g.
linux)- port forward the ports for your proxy on your router. then just use
proxy in msn. i had it working great like that.. just a lot of work. the
other way is to use use coyote linux as a router.. usually solves all
problems when it comes to routing.
