I went and manually downloaded the following patch, and saved it in
directory/folder right off the root:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

HOWEVER, you will have to manually force it to install using a switch via
the DOS/command prompt (which is why you want to keep it close to the root
for quick access).

Here is what to do:

1. Save the above patch.

2. Run "q831167.exe /n:v" from the COMMAND PROMPT (not Run)

NOTE! If you don't apply the switch this may not install!

3. After installation, you will either need to rerun Update or likely you
have an automatic update icon on your taskbar which you can run off of.
(It will say it is 0 kb in size, but that is not a concern because it is
already waiting to be installed and does not need to be downloaded.)

4. Accept the "Restart" prompt. When you come back to Windows it should no
longer bug you about installing the patch.

The only other way I discovered this fix this, and this only for Windows
2000, is to download and reinstall IE6 SP1 and overwrite your current
installation, then rerun Update to reapply patches (about 4 or 5). I had to
do this the other night on a fresh installation and when I had tried to run
the new patch it said I didn't have IE6 SP1 installed.

I did some digging today at work and found the fix I noted up above. This
was done at a Windows 2000 system but I would think it should work for any of
the OS.

Cheers!

Sorry, forgot to mention originally what this was for originally. I thought
the discussions for KB931768 were in their own discussion and not the general
Windows Update discussion.

To make it very clear:
There's *no* issue with installing KB931768 on Windows 2000 SP4
but there are issues right now with Windows Update detection
mechanism which is offering outdated updates if some hyperfluend
registry entries are missing.

You don't need to install any outdated update with the /n:v
parameter but you may like to download
http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/Q867801-WUFix.zip
which recreates the "missing" registry entries WU is looking
after right now.

Extract the containing "Q867801-WUFix.reg". Afterwards double click the
REG file and let it merge into the registry. Finally shut down all open
IE windows and see if WU/AU still offers KB/Q867801, KB/Q832894, KB/
Q831167 and/or KB/Q823353.

Bye,
Freudi

This seems to be fixed right now, as WU doesn't offer any outdated
updates here any longer for a machine with KB931768 installed.

Bye,
