I had this issue. I went to
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/dow...displaylang=en and
completed the validation and I could run windowsupdate fine again. This
should work no matter if you actually have genuine windows or not.

I have genuine windows XP home edition and did this to no avail.My install
starts but
never completes=hangs at the start then rushes through and get message that
uodates were not installed.Wish this site had easy to follow directions on
what you do.
