If you hit Error number: 0x8DDD0018 (full error message at the bottom), this
might help. I checked out various online help sites including the
Windowsupdate FAQ, troubleshooter, etc..; nothing helpful there.

Took about 1 hour to figure this out then another to test/verify. Works
consistenty on my machine with Windows XP Pro, SP1 and all updates up to
Windows Update V5 updates checker/software.

1. Make sure you have the Background Intelligent Transfer service RUNNING
and configured to AUTOMATIC start. You can change its state from the services
panel (lots of instructions here on how to get there).

2. Make sure the Automatic Updates service set to AUTOMATIC start. It
doesn't matter if the service is actually started or not but it matters if
it's set to AUTOMATIC start. Weird but that's the behavior on my machine.

3. Ignore the "Help protect your PC" message on the right side of the screen
on the Windowsupdate page. It refers to the Auto-update setting on V5 that is
now configured independent of the WindowsUpdate service. That means, whatever
configuration you have in the "Automatic Updates Service" does not affect the
configuration of your "Automatic Updates Software" setting (right-click on My
Computer and click on Properties then Automatic Updates tab).

That fixed things for me and taught me some of the behavioral changes in V5.
I don't yet understand how and why but at least I've started on what. :-)

Good luck.

Windows Update cannot continue because a required service application is
disabled. Windows Update requires the following services:
Automatic Updates enables detection, downloading, and installation of
critical updates for your computer.
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) enables faster, restartable
downloading of updates.
Event Log logs Windows Update events for troubleshooting. To ensure that
these services are enabled:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type services.msc and then click OK.
3. In the list of services, right-click the service name, and then click
Properties.
4. In the Startup type list, select Automatic.
5. Verify that the service status is started.

If this does not resolve the problem you may request help from one of the
following resources.

For self-help options:
Windows Update Response Center
Windows Update Troubleshooter
Windows Update Newsgroups

For assisted support options:
Microsoft Online Assisted Support (no-cost for Windows Update issues)

Ok, but can you tell me what to do here: I've set all stuff that you should
update except for Automatic updates. When I try to change it to Automatic it
says something about that it is stopped and I can't save the changes. If you
ave an answer, please tell me =)

Hi

Reset the security settings on the BITS and Windows Update services
and see if it helps:

http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...TNGP12.phx.gbl

(the "sc sdset ..." part for the two services in the link above)

Then, after the above, do the following:

Click Start >> Run >>
Type the follow command in the Open box.
"net.exe stop wuauserv" (w/o quotes)
Press Ok

Repeat the same for the following commands:

regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
regsvr32.exe wups.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe MSXML3.dll
regsvr32.exe qmgr.dll
regsvr32.exe qmgrprxy.dll
net.exe start wuauserv

Restart the machine and try again.
