Possible Update Problems?

I have been having this problem for a while now. But lately it has gotten
worse. Around christmas, I was infected with ISTbar and had a friend
eliminate it for me. He also updated my computer for me as well. All seemed
ok for a while until my computer began to stop responding for about 20
minutes on every third logon. After 20 minutes it went back to normal but
brought up a message: Application encountered a problem and needed to close.
As of late, this has continued to happen, but now two new messages accompany
the Application message. They read: sys1412.exe has encountered a problem and
needed to close. : and this one too: Generic Host Processing for Win32
encountered a problem and needed to close. This is making me think my
computer is gradually getting worse and worse. I consulted an E-machines
representative for help and he suggested that I try using system restore. The
same E-machines representative told me that the system update is responsible
for what is happening. Is that true? For some reason, I can't restore any
earlier than February 18 and when I do that, no changes are made. What do I
do? What is wrong? How can I prevent this in the future? A friend has told me
that system files may be corrupted. Is this possible? Can I get replacements
if that is true? Will it cost money if it is? HELP ME!
