"TR",
This is not off-topic for this particular newsgroup, as you asked whether or
not Windows Update would be able to update fonts. As Robert has answered
that question, let me just say that for now--Windows Update does not update
fonts generally--although there is no reason why there may not be in the
very near future optional updates to fonts available from the Windows Update
website. None of this should be taken as a commitment implied or inferred,
but any component of Windows on supported platforms is open to update and
fonts are indeed part of the OS files.
I also agree with Robert that there is a way to unpack a cab file on the HP
recovery CD and install those fonts. I would bet, though, that the easier
way would be to search for Fonts for Windows XP, and just download and
install them yourself. My mother-in-law had me download one on her PC for
Halloween, and it was Windows XP.
Sincerely,
Pat Walters [MSFT]
