Possible virus blocking update (???)

WU stopped downloading at all around Aug 16th. It runs the checking your
system for updates meter bar endlessly, then brings up an error page. Here's
the rub: After trying to run Microsoft Updatre My (Windows) Firewall is shut
down and network connections are deleted. I can't access the Firewall
because ICS needs to be started and I can't restart ICS. Had to use System
Restore to get it back on. Running XP Pro SP2, Windows Firewall (no
exceptions), V-Com antivirus (uses TSC files), Windows Defender (Beta 2,
Definition #1.14.1648.4) and Windows Pop-Up Blocker. I'm downloading a fresh
copy of Sysclean right now but I'm not sure it will help. NOTHING shows up
when I run the anti-virus program or Windows Defender. I'm clueless here and
have no idea how this is happening. Everyone who has used this computer have
no recollection of anything else being wrong.

PLEASE NOTE: I was finally able to get Automatic Update to work and
downloaded and updated my system without problems. I was still unable to get
the Windows Update website to work, as per my original message. My system is
virus and spyware free. I've noticed a lot of people are having trouble with
this website. Can any MVP please respond to my original message?????????
