I successfully installed SP2 from CD and followed up with trying to install
subsequent updates. The two critical updates. GDI+ and .Net Framework SP1
can't be downloaded. I tried to manually start the BITS but it failed. I
tried the windows online assistance link but it also failed...hosed my
machine. System event log shows the following for the windows update:
The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service terminated with
service-specific error 2147942405 (0x80070005).

Hi Linda,

The BITS public newsgroup is microsoft.public.windows.backgroundtransfer.
Please post the problem there. Maybe a solution is already presented in that
newsgroup.

try:
Could be missing network dir or corrupt states
files.Qmgr0.dat and Qmgr1.dat in
Drive:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\
Make copy dir,del downloader dir try start BITS.
if not work replace with copy or undelete
could be also wrong security permission there.

Thanks Daniel...I'll do that if the solution in the next post doesn't work.

I renamed the directory you indicated and then tried to start BITS from the
services control panel and got the same message. The catch-22 here is that
I can't use the Microsoft Online Assistance URL that's suggested in the
system event log. This may point out that other things are broken as well
as BITS.

Thanks anyway and if you think of something else please let me know...I'm
stuck trying to get this machine updated so I can go forward with my .Net
development project.
