Power Management of External Harddrive

I am thinking about buying an external harddrive. I would like to leave the
harddrive on all the time. Here are the questions I have.

1. Is it O.K. to leave the external harddrive on all the time?
2. How to do power management of the external harddrive? I don't see a way
to specify the idle time to turn the harddrive off in Vista power management
control.
3. Will the harddrive turn it off automatically?

Thanks for your help.

Manufacturer's software that was included with my external hard drive puts
the drive to sleep. YMMV.

Ok, I will try this again using notepad first.
I was trying to type the following.

What is the interface you will be using, USB, Firewire, eSata ?

For some odd reason my Windows Live Mail would send my post as I was typing
out my message.
I have logged off and logged back on, and hope the anomaly has gone away.

Alt-s sends the message. Since you were typing the s in is when it sent, I
think it likely you were experiencing a stuck (or mis-struck) alt key.
