Power Scheme-Sleep Mode

Power Scheme-Sleep Mode

I use Vista on my Dell PC and have my power settings set to turn off my
monitor in 15 minutes and my PC in 20 minutes (sleep mode). When my PC
enters the Sleep mode, it only stays in that mode a short time, usually three
or so minutes at the maximum, then it activates and my monitor turns on. Is
this normal for this power option? I would expect my PC to stay in the Sleep
mode for a longer period of time, at least some of the time.

You might want to check which devices are allowed to bring your computer out
of sleep mode. In particular, check your network adapter and mouse.
To do this, click the Window key + Pause/Break, select Device Manager, then
locate these devices in the device list. For each, right-click and select
Properties, then click the Power Management tab (if there is one), and be
sure that "Allow this device to wake up the computer" is not checked.

Joaneee –

It appears you steered me correct. This is what I found. I have two
entries in Device Manager for my mouse and they both have checked “Allow this
device to wake the computer.� A network adapter listing has a heading “Wake
on LAN� with three options checked as follows: Wake on Directed Packet, Wake
on Magic Packet and Wake on Magic Packet from Power Off State. A fourth
option, Wake on Link, was not checked.

Now, with all of these checked, am I suppose to uncheck them all? It seems
like I will be missing something if I uncheck them all; and these checked
items were as I received my PC when new.

Also, I have some scheduled events that I have checked “Wake the computer to
run this task.� I don’t want to lose that option. Also, if I uncheck the
mouse items, how do I take my PC out of Sleep mode? Do I use the keyboard?

Re: the mouse - it's to easy for mice to be disturbed, so I'd leave it
unchecked and use the keyboard to wake up the computer. RE: network adapter -
you have a lot more options than I do, but I'd still uncheck them. You can
always check them again if things don't work right for you.
Re: scheduled events, by all means continue to let them wake up the computer.

Thanks for the return. I'll give it a try. I'm still trying to figure out
why those "wake me" check marks were checked when I received the PC. I know
I did not put them there.
