Powerdesk 7 and Favorites

I was having problems with Powerdesk 7 and creating new favorites. I found a
work around until they fix it.

Add a folder at the end of this path:

C:\Users\YOURNAMEHERE\AppData\Roaming\Avanquest\Po werDesk\

Named "Favorites" without the quotes and you will have the ability to use
your favorites folders again. (Close and reopen PD after you add this
folder).

Regards, Rich

Hope you don't mind a question?
I use Powerdesk 6 Pro which is a VCom product but there's no mention of V7
on their website. Is it not a VCom product any more?

I found this on Google.
http://www.avanquest.com/USA/pc-tool...esk_Pro_7.html

There seem to be people mentioning some offer for getting it for under a
tenner on Google as well.

Nope Avantquest bought them or Powerdesk at least. I found a link for the
upgrade for $19 US. Not much changed and if 6.042 is working you don't need
the upgrade.

Many thanks Rich & SS :-)

The only thing missing from v6 is a copy/move button to quickly copy/move
stuff from source to destination. I haven't tried it on Vista yet.

Jeff,

I've been using Powerdesk since version 2. I bought the Powerdesk Pro 7 upgrade
(7.0.1.1) about a month ago and it still has problems on Vista (I'm using Home
Basic). Although the issues with PD 6 on Vista were mostly fixed, there are new ones
in PD 7.

For example, the Dialog Helper works on very few applications (much fewer than with
PD 6 on Vista). The Helper icons do not appear in many application dialogs that
previously worked fine on Vista. The Helper load on startup option doesn't work
(it's blocked by Vista). If you try to load the Helper on startup with Task
Scheduler, it sometimes freezes Vista on startup, requiring an AC power down and a
reboot.

I also find that PD 7 crashes whenever the viewer pane is invoked while attempting to
view the contents of files inside a zip or RAR archive. Doesn't matter what the file
type is within the zip or RAR (even a .txt file causes a crash). After the content
is extracted from the archive file, the files show normally in the viewer. The PD 6
viewer pane worked perfectly with archive files on Vista.

The PD 7 Uninstaller fails badly on Vista. First, it shows the UAC "unidentified
publisher" prompt (meaning that it isn't ready for Vista), and then it fails to
remove all folders and files below the main Powerdesk program folder. A total of six
sub folders containing 679 files were left behind in Program Files, as well as many
registry entries.

I would say that Powerdesk Pro 7.0.1.1 is still at the beta level, in terms of
reliability and features on Vista. Basic file operations work fine, but some other
features don't work as well as with PD 6. However, I did not have the problem with
the Favorites folder mentioned above.

Hi Doug, many thanks for the review :-)

I am currently installing XP64 Pro, I don't know why I keep putting myself
through the pain of Vista. Latest trick is a network adaptor that is shown
as working in device manager but according to the "Network Centre" doesn't
exist (it worked all day until about 6 p.m., perhaps it's a part timer).

How on earth MSFT let Vista out the door I really don't know.

I experienced the same problems. You could add a major weakness: the viewer doesn't support Office 2007 formats. PowerDesk is no longer what it used to be (it was almost perfect with Windows XP and Office 2003). Avanquest told me they were not aware of plans to support MS Office 2007 file formats...

<sigh> as WHAT? This is a GLOBAL USENET Newsgroup, the forum you are posting
to leaches off these newsgroups in order to make it look as though there are
lots of people using it. We (the people who use the Newsgroup) CANNOT see

One of the upcoming leaches is Gordon. He is trying very hard to achieve
retard status like Alias, Ringmaster, measekite, and a few others. Don't
worry Gordon, I am sure will not disappoint.
