IMO, Sleep is good if you want to stow away your laptop for short duration.
Sleep basically boils down to Standby with insurance of Hibernate. For
longer durations, the standby nature of sleep drains down the laptop battery
and hence you should go in for hibernation.
For desktops, same reasoning holds since you don't want to waste power.
