Prevent Auto-Start

Hello all,

I want to know how to prevent the crappy active-sync from auto-loading with
my system.
I deleted the value for wcescomm.exe from my HKCU\Run registry key, but
every time
that i open active-sync, it puts itself back. And there are no options in
ActiveSync that I can
find to turn off this "feature". It's an awfully arrogant program to ASSUME
that i ALWAYS
want it to be running.

I am forced to use active-sync for some development stuff, but i dont want
it always running
because it does not play nice with other programs that also want to use com
ports (i think
active-sync assumes it is the only one allowed to use them, grabs them, and
wont release them).
Plus, I have no need for it other than the occasional development project,
so i dont want it
taking up memory and cpu time.

All-in-all, i really cannot stand this piece of software, because it is
terribly arrogrant,
presumptuous, and doesn't give me, the user, any control over what IT feels
is best for me.

It doesn't use up any CPU time unless you're actually in the process of
connecting and it's active. There's no way, other than changing the code
for the program to prevent it from reconfiguring the device to start itself
at appropriate times. You could write a program to scrub the device
registry and the event response list to remove all of the repllog.exe
entries, I suppose.

I'm sure that the reasoning behind it doing this is that most people are
users of the device, not programmers, who are used to things not working.
When they plug the device into the cradle or whatever, they expect it to
just work. No doubt the engineers felt that they could give a more-reliable
connection experience if they kept it running. If that is, in fact, the
case, I really can't argue with them not providing an option that an novice
user might easily set, thus stopping his device from working (it does that
enough on its own already ;-)

If you're on a WM5 device, you shouldn't be having any problems with AS
taking over serial ports. If it's a Bluetooth serial port, that should only
be grabbed when you actually tell AS on the device to connect via Bluetooth.
A few more details on what exactly the device is and what versions of things
it's using might help...

Hi,
Basically each time you run ActiveSync it will reinstall itself to run at
boot time. So all you can do is run an application to kill it at the time
you boot. You can place an app like Killsync from
www.pocketpcfaq.com/applications/ in your Startup folder and it will close
ActiveSync at the same time you boot.

Hi,

Another options you could consider include - ActiveSync Toggle -

AS writes to its log file about 4 times each second,
according to filemon. It does this until it's connects
to a device, then it stops -- until you disconnect, then
4x each second it writes to its log file, ad nauseam.
