Whenever I go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

which is redirected to:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

and I ask which updates I need, I always get offered SP2.

How to I get the web page not to offer me SP2?

Install SP2 and it will no longer be offered.

You're great in cynical off-topic responses.

The OP asked *not to be offered SP2.
(he probably has a valid reason)
AFAIK this cannot be prevented through WU.

You suggested to install SP2...

I doubt whether the OP "values" this kind of advice.

But maybe you can help me out.
After the do-not-offer grace period for SP2 ended
I'm still not being offered SP2 through Windowsupdate.
WU works just fine when it comes to offering other patches.

There was/is no way of knowing for WU that SP2 is not compatible with my older
hardware,
the original SP2 install forced me to reinstall XP-sp1 (incompatible
hardware/drivers)

Still, WU no longer offers SP2 after reinstalling XP.
Just what I wanted, but it puzzles me.

Any ideas?

I have installed SP2 on several PCs built in 1998
and never had a hardware incompatibility issue.
SP2 also includes many updated hardware drivers.

Order a free SP2 CD:

The fact that you experienced no problems installing SP2 on several PCs built in 1998
is basically anecdotal and of little value to me.

I'm on a clean XP with SP1 (end of 2002) on a Medion PC (www.medion.com (.de)
that runs into trouble when SP2 is installed.
(incompatible propriety VGA software with analogue/digital video-in,
and no updated drivers available, they're not even MS signed, must sound familiar)

I'm aware that SP2 also includes many updated hardware drivers,
unfortunately not for the equipment I use (eg a regular Canon FB630),
and according to Jupiter Jones, well,
"Drivers are not and cannot be Microsoft's responsibility".

As your fellow MVP posted very eloquently:
(Jupiter Jones, March 5, in
"Microsoft support of windows xp without sp2"

---quote--
"what if a vendor doesn't..."
That is entirely up to the vender.
If your vender will not support your hardware, find a vender who will.
Drivers are not and can not be Microsoft's responsibility."
----

I will keep that in mind - is MS a vender that will not support my hardware?
It sure looks that way - and like your fellow MVP advised:
finding a vendor who will must be the way to go to solve the problem.

Microsoft does not support the hardware as you seem to suggest.
It is up to the hardware manufacturers.
If there are no Windows XP drivers for your hardware in or out of Windows,
that is the doing of your hardware manufacturer.
The drivers Microsoft distributes are provided by the hardware
manufacturers.
What have they said when you asked them about Windows XP support?

"David Peters" and "Dutch User",

You do NOT, at present, need to install Service Pack 2 for Windows XP. At this
time ( 28 April 2005 ), Windows XP "Gold" is no longer supported WITHOUT at
least Service Pack 1 installed--at the Windows Update website. There will still
be a few updates that may appear to the user on the "Gold" version of Windows
XP, but then they will be offered one or both Service Packs currently available
for that operating system, and will conveniently NOT be offered all of the other
updates.

You should be able to "Hide this update."

Please reply back and let me know if you are unable to do that. This changes
somewhat if Automatic Updates downloaded it before you had a chance to refuse
the update.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

Carey, what you say is probably true.

But another truism is that some of my software is on the known
problem list at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=842242

So I need to avoid SP2 for the time being.

Whenever I go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ I am redirected
to http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp and then when
I ask which updates I need, I always get offered SP2.

How to I get this webpage not to offer me SP2?

Do you know how you did this?

How do I ask the windows updater to hide the offer of an SP2 update?
