How to prevent programs launching at startup?

With XP, I used Mike Lin's StartupMonitor. The purpose was to preven
programs from installing themselves to launch at startup. StartupMonito
gave me the option to allow or not to allow

The usual culprits were Adobe, Flash, Realplay, etc

In Vista, is there any way to prevent such programs from launching a
startup

Vista includes the MSCONFIG.EXE utility the same as XP did and it can block
startup programs.

I use Autoruns from MS/Sysinternals. It is very comprehensive and easy
to use either through the GUI or command line.

I would say autoruns does more than most of other utilities.

It covers multiple code "classes", not only applications,
abut also shell extensions, dlls, IE toolbars, Browser helpers,
services, drivers and more.

usable in Vista 64 too ( mine )

In most cases, with "well-mannered" applications, it's usually as
simple as opening the undesired program and deselecting the option to
"display icon in the system tray" or to "start when Windows starts."

Additionally, Look in the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start
Menu\Start Up folder, and in the system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

This Knowledge Base Article refers to WinXP, but the same
principles apply in Vista:

How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;310560

Remember, Msconfig was designed to be a troubleshooting tool, not a
"startup configurer." Use MSConfig to determine the location of the
command that is attempting to start the program, and remove it. To
cease the selective startup notifications, either return your settings
to the way they were, or permanently remove the undesirable programs
from your startup configuration.

Many thanks for all the replies

I've used all the recommendations at some time or other. It seems to m
that, in terms of *power*, the three recommended tools can be graded i
descending order

1) Autoruns. Shows everything. I can enable or disable anything I wan
to. (If I knew what they were all for

2) Windows Defender. Does not seem to show as much as Autoruns. And fo
some applications, the disable button is greyed out. (That's why I us
Autoruns.

3) Shows only a fraction of the applications that are shown by th
other two. (For example, my Kerio firewall is not shown.

Unfortunately, none of these tools does what Mike Lin's tool does
prevents sneaky attemps by an application to configure itself to run a
startup. Mike Lin's tool gave a message: "Adobe Flash is trying t
configure itself to run at startup. Allow/Deny

So, the installation can be approved by me, but not the ability t
launch at startup

The three tools mentioned above are only useful *after" the applicatio
has actually been installed. (Like bolting the stable door after th
horse has already bolted it

I would suggest Comodo Personal firewall with HIPS
( Host Intrusion Prevention System ),
ony similar systems.

It checks many things applications can do a do,
but should not.

Note that I do not recommend AV part
of CIS 3.5 ( SW FW + HIPS + AV ),
all modules are optional.

Well, dang me, shiver me timbers, and knock me down with a feather

I've been using S&D for about 50 years, but I always thought that the
TeaTimer and Immunization were for Internet Explorer only. (At one
time, that was true.) So, I've been using it on demand only.

Thanks for the tip
