One thing to add that any changes to these settings only affect future events that occur -
not current/existing ones. For existing ones he can just go his profile page, hover over the
display picture update, click the small blue gear that appears and choose Remove this update.
As well, your display picture is only transmitted at certain times, which makes this a bit
difficult to reproduce/test as you've noted. However, one thing worth trying is turning off
roaming display pictures, which can be toggled by opening up the main Messenger window,
pressing the Alt key on the keyboard to bring up the menu bar, choose Tools, then Options,
then Sign In category and unchecking the 'use the same display picture and personal message
wherever I sign in'.
