preventing SP2 update

Hi,

If I have windows update set to OFF, will it prevent the so-called
forced-install of SP2 ? My sister's computer keeps getting BSOD's
because SP2 keeps getting installed. I just spent 5 hours re-installing
windows with her on the phone and we disabled windows update
but I'd really like to know if it might somehow come through anyway.

I was thinking that if it will try and do it anyway against my express
wishes then I could map the windowsupdate.com to localhost in the
hosts file or something.

Considering it's a "forced" update chances are she could get SP2 again. If I
were you I would have reinstalled Windows XP with Service Pack 2
slipstreamed.

Bit tricky, we were doing it over the phone and she only has her
2-3 year old OEM XP CD... To get one with SP2 would mean
buying a new full version of XP.

The websites I've read about this April 12th releasing of the option
to not install SP2 were implying that if you auto-update, you will no
longer have the option of dismissing SP2, but none of them mention
whether you still get it even if WU is completely disabled.

Maybe banning the site using the host files is the only option.

I wonder if there'll be a class action lawsuit against microsoft for
breaking peoples computer who expressly don't want them broken.

Two things:

1. The "forced install" scare is hype. SP2 will not install if you do not
agree to the EULA. It will not install itself. The April 12 date was the
expiration of the tool which prevented the automatic _download_ of SP2. On
April 12 WU will ignore the registry setting blocking the SP2 download.
(that's download, not installation) After the download is complete, The EULA
screen will be displayed. If SP2 is being installed on your sister's
machine, she is clicking OK on the EULA. If you click on "I disagree" SP2
will not be installed. Period.

2. As far as a class-action lawsuit, you might want to actually READ the
EULA. You do not own Microsoft software. You own a licence to run a copy of
it. They can make changes as they see fit. It also says in there that they
are not responsible for just about anything bad that happens as a result,
including damages, lost profits, fitness for a particular purpose, etc.

I didn't mind having SP2 -- I put it on my computer myself a while back
-- but something they did in this update has BSOD'd my computer on
boot. 0xc0000018. And no one seems to have any information on it yet.
I'm not reinstalling my Windows if I don't have to. It's a pain in the
tail.

There will not and can not be a class action lawsuit for this action.
Perhaps you should seek a lawsuit against the sites giving bad information.
If you do not want SP-2 and configure Automatic Update appropriately, your
computer will not get SP-2:

Please do not contribute to the bad information.
SP-2 will NOT forced on any computer by Microsoft.
Anyone that says otherwise is WRONG.

I never said it'd be "forced" and if I did I didn't mean that it meant you
wouldn't be able to do anything until you installed it.

I'd still recommend downloading and installing it at this point before you
install all her applications again.

Please follow the procedure suggested by microsoft to solve BSOD problem from
the latest windows update. My DELL notebook was crashed suddenly after
updating the new patches. Today morning I tried with this method. It takes
only few minutes - much easier and faster than re-installation
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Insert the Windows XP startup disk in your floppy disk drive or insert
the Windows XP CD in the CD drive or in the DVD drive, and then restart your
computer.

Note When you receive the following message, press a key to start your
computer from the Windows XP CD:
Press any key to boot from CD

Note Your computer must be configured to start from the CD drive or the DVD
drive. For more information about how to configure your computer to start
from the CD drive or the DVD drive, see the documentation that came with your
computer or contact the computer manufacturer.
2. When you receive the Welcome to Setup message, press R to start the
Recovery Console.

Note Multiple options will appear on the screen.
3. Select the Windows XP installation in question.

Note You must select a number before you press ENTER, or the computer will
restart. Typically, only the 1: C:\Windows selection is available.
4. If you are prompted to type an administrator password, do so. If you do
not know the administrator password, press ENTER. (Typically, the password is
blank.)

Note You will not be able to continue if you do not have the administrator
password.
5. At the command prompt, type cd $ntuninstallKB.........HERE THE NUMBER OF
THE PATCH.....$\spuninst, and then press ENTER.

Note After you complete this step, you cannot stop the removal process.
6. At the command prompt, type batch spuninst.txt, and then press ENTER.

7. After the Ptach is removed, type exit, and then press ENTER oo Uninstall
the Next

The newest Critical Patches was the
