What price SP2

Reading through posts on this and other newsgroups I am under the impression
that the repair shops are going to make a fortune, plus these repairers will
be so busy many users will be without their computers for long periods of
time. There are many many people out there completely unaware that, without
they're permission, their machines are about to be invaded by MS and
possibly left incapacitated.

I installed with no problem at all.

First I made a backup.

Then I ran Registry Mechanic to make sure my registry was clean.

Then I ran Diskeeper Pro and did a boot time defrag ( moves files Windows
won't ).

Then I made another backup with everything defragged and cleaned up

THEN I installed the SP2 and I haven't discovered a single problem so far.

Good for you az-willie, but there are many people out there who are not
aware of these newsgroups or are not bothered to discover what is going on
in the world. They use their computers to surf the web and write e-mails,
they believe that by setting their options for automatic updates this will
take care of everything. As for defragment and other procedures they look
blankly at you and think you are conversing in a foreign language.
Obviously from recent posts, they are now in for a rude awakening.

Derek;
The reality is perhaps it is time more people start to learn there is
more to a computer than a toaster.
But even a toaster needs periodic maintenance.
And as for your statement in the other post "about to be invaded by
MS", extremely misleading since it is easy to turn it off.
Another reality is if updates do not get installed automatically in
this or similar way, they will not be installed on many computers.

Do you know what happens then?
Do you know what you might see?
Peoples computers being taken over remotely directly or by a virus
sending out countless spam.
Countless spam causing direct and indirect costs increases for YOU and
others.
Direct...your ISP has to add equipment to deal with extra spam.
Indirect...In business this spam is eating man-hours and other
resources, again resources paid for by YOU and others.

Without updates, those and other worse things may happen because many
need it done automatically.
Wait...those things are already happening.
This is a problem that has been growing.
There is no perfect solution.

To identify a problem and offer no solution is really nothing at all.
What is your solution?

Very true. I only posted to give some of those newbies a clue how to go
about installing the update RIGHT.

Just waking up in the morning and going to the update site and downloading
and installing is asking for disaster if you don't prepare your machine
first.

Most of the preparation should already be done.
Most of preparation is proper maintenance.
Many problems Service Pack installation issues are prevented simply by
doing what should already be routinely done.

I've installed SP2 in three small offices so far. I did tell folks that I'd
done it after the fact, and I did check that the normal applications they
use didn' suffer major issues.

I've had zero help inquiries related to the SP. One staff member in one
office commented that the popup blocker interfered with desirable popups in
one web mechanism she uses regularly, but that she had no trouble learning
how to exempt that site.

I think we'll get queries, but that many of them will be unrelated to SP2,
others of them will be basically irrational FUD, and a few will involve real
situations where things have changed and workarounds are needed. I'm aware
of one bug for which a hotfix is available so far. It is possible there are
others, but this one affects relatively few folks--those who use Loopback
addresses other than 127.0.0.1.

If that's greek to you--don't worry about it--its just an example of how
generally abstruse some of the issues are going to be. They are not going
to be things that will bother my mother-in-law, for example--or even anyone
else in my family except me.

Jupiter Jones,
I have now, after applying pressure, found how to block SP2 (be it
temporarily). This information is not easily located, I think a little more
published information would not go amiss. As for comparing a computer with
a toaster, a toaster is relatively cheap and is quickly replaced when
defective whereas a computer is not so easily come by. I understand that
there is a need for this SP2 upgrade, but when the preparatory v4 to v5
gives three different results on three different computers and nobody can
really explain why, along with known bugs with earlier MS software are you
surprised that users are a bit hesitant with this new major change?

az-willie, there are many people who own computers, who use them at their
workplace and don't know the first thing about the operation of a computer.
They just know what they need to know to complete their task. To use an
analogy, many people drive a car but they don't necessarily know or need to
know the first thing about what goes on under the hood (bonnet).

Derek;
The point is even a toaster needs maintenance.
At least any toaster I have used accumulates crumbs at the bottom.
There are people that do more for their toaster than their computer
and yet expect the computer to continue to work flawlessly, it can't
and won't.
The fact a computer costs more is a good reason why people should
expect to do more to maintain the computer not less.

The tool to disable SP-2 installation was only made available 10
August, since then it is widely referenced on many newsgroups and
websites.
So I am not sure why or where pressure was applied.

As for v4 to v5, it is common knowledge that the upgrade is random
over time, similar for Service Pack 2 starting tomorrow if Microsoft
keeps with the schedule which they have so far.
It is also common knowledge that switching the 5 in place of 4 starts
the upgrade of the software.

Perhaps that is not what you meant, but if it was, you may have looked
in the wrong places.
