It gets to step 3/4 and 95% complete before this happens. I have
contacted HP but so far mothing works. Here is the event viewer html

Hi Cindy--

You meant you uninstalled your printer driver. Try this:

1) Unplug your printer and unplug the USB cord and replug them.Re
2) Restart if necessary to get the hdw recognized by Vista.
3) Reinstall the newest appropriate printer driver from the manufacturer's
site--drivers are software and they corrupt like anything else when you
least expect it. That has fixed many a printer.
4) In the control panel, go to the add hardware wizard>select browse>and
type in the file path where you have downloaded the printer driver. It will
probably be something like C:\Program Files\HP>click OK in the wizard.
4) Check Device Manager by typing it into search or typing devmgmt.msc into
search or the run box and see if your printer is entered there. It should
be unless you are sharing the printer among two or more pcs and in that case
it will be in Device Manager on the pc where the printer was originally
installed .
5) Find the printer in the printer folder. Right click it>properties>port
tab and make sure that the port is the right one for your printer. You
failed to give me your printer type and it would have helped but generally
every printer when installed correctly uses a USB type port and it should be
checked in Vista unless you have an old one with parallel cables and then it
uses an LPT port.

Additionally if still problems:

Physically disconnect your printer from your PC, unistall any printer
software, download and install the latest printer driver or software from
manufacture's site.

Sometimes although printer directions reverse this and cause a "16 bit
subsystem false dos error" it is advisable to unplug the printer and the usb
cable> restart the pc>plug them in while restarting>then reinstall the
driver.

Although your milage may vary, with most hdw drivers of any type in Vista
and XP, you don't need to uninstall the old driver to install a new one
intact. However, there are some that require this--usually not
printers--and they are usually explicit that you have to uninstall the old
driver just as some software is explicit in telling you to uninstall the
previous or old software including a good deal of software from MSFT.

If you should have Windows One Care on your box, you can open it>click
sttings>go to the printer sharing tab and check box the printer sharing box
and that seamlessly will share all the printers on your network.
