Hey Guys,
Here's an interesting issue I've come across. We have about 40 users on our
network. Attached to the network we have this big Sharp DM-4551
copy/fax/print/scanner stand-alone unit. It works great and it's very fast.
Scans loads of documents in no time and sends it directly to the user's
Sharpdesk application on the client computer.
I've recently been rebuilding all client computers with XP ProSP3 and
joining them to the newly created domain, with centralized AV and hopefully
better overall security. However, after working on the newly rebuilt
machines, the users have noticed that they are unable to send multi page
faxes thru the SharpDesk application. After struggling with it a bit, we
came realize it's a permission related issue, as an Administrator is able to
fax with no problem, but user faxes only send out the cover page. I applied
all available permissions to the Everyone group on the local machine,
including the Advanced Special permissions such as the Manage Printer
permission. I made sure to log off and log back on after each change. I made
the users part of the Print Operators group, still no joy! The problem was
only solved once the users were made part of the local Power Users group.
However, I'm not happy with this solution, as it gives the users more powers
than I wish. My goal is to lock down the worksations as much as possible in
order to prevent unwanted issues and problem.
Have you come across such issues before and how did you resolve it? What
would you suggest is best way of dealing with this?
Thanks
