Printer no longer recognised

I wanted to print a few photos, something I hadn't done for a few months
(Canon SP710 on Vista Insultingly called "Family" insultingly called
"Premium", a fairly common configuration).

V*sta failed to recognise the printer, which had previously worked ok many
times.

I had to uninstall it, reboot (thus closing the applications that were in
use), download a new driver, install it and the deal with that stupid V*sta
window that tells you the installation doesn't comply with V*sta and what do
you want to do about it.

If Microsoft can't handle one of the most common photo printers with one of
its most common OS, there must be something very seriously wrong.

Of course V*sta will shortly be declared obsolete (legacy in m$ speak). Do
they really expect us to pay still more money for the replacement which we
can expect from past experience to be even more horrible?

I WANT TO USE MY COMPUTER

Are you installing using the CD provided, or have you downloaded Vista
drivers from the Canon support pages?

I didn't have the disk to hand (I work in 2 places) so I went to the Canon
site.
