Printing & Sharing from Vista to XP

I followed the article that is frequently recommended here for printing &
file sharing problems with a Vista to XP with a printer:

Everything goes well until the section marked "Accessing a Shared Printer" .
When I click on the XP printer in the Vista Network window, which I can see
per the article, I get the following error: "Windows cannot connect to
printer. Access is Denied."

Then, when I go back to the Network window in Vista, the XP computer
disappears.

So I can't connect to the XP printer, and I also cannot find the XP computer.
Any help appreciated.

The Microsoft article covers setting the Vista computer up, it doesn't go into
the details of co existing with Windows XP, and of the non Microsoft problems
that may exist.

The "access denied" error is typically caused by a personal firewall, or by lack
of assigned permissions.

Is the XP computer running XP Home or Pro? If Pro, using Advanced, or Simple,
File Sharing? Make the Vista Password Protected Sharing setting match! And
make sure that the right account, on both computers, is Activated for network
access!

Do a simple test. Can you ping XP by IP if the firewall turn off?

In Vista's Network and Sharing click on Add Network Device and browse to XP's
printer. Don't accidently click on shared user one as that is for other user
acc. on Vista.
And make sure XP's printer has been shared

Also in Vista do you have Network Discovery ON, file sharing ON, Network set
to Private, etc.

Thanks for the links & reply Chuck. However, I'm not making progress. I
cannot see the XP computer on the Vista's Networking window. I have XP Home
and Simple File Sharing is enabled. I enabled Guest authentication. I
activated the guest account properly for network access. I synchronised the
passwords on all accounts on both computer (no passwords for any of them). I
simply cannot see the XP computer on the Vista's Networking window anymore,
let alone file share. The firewall is turned off. I've worked on this problem
for about five hours this past Sunday, and around 2-3 hours each night this
week after work. So I'm trying, but I'm running out of steam and I starting
to think about giving up.

I have the same problem as Red. I'm trying to connect to a printer attached
to an XP computer over a wireless network. Another XP computer can print
wirelessly, but the Vista machine cannot. I was able to install the printer
but when I can't get a test page to print. When I try to access the XP
computer's files I get an "Access Denied" message.

I have no personal firewalls
I cannot ping the XP computer from the Vista machine.
The Vista machine cannot see any of the files or use the printer on the host
XP machine
The Vista machine CAN see and access files on the other XP client machine -
both are connected to the home network via wireless adapters.
I have enabled file sharing.
Network Discovery is on
Network is set to private
I can access the Internet
I cannot print from the Vista client.

The XP machines are XP Home.
The Vista machine is Vista Business
The Vista machine can print when connected directly to the printer

Well, it's your computers so you're entitled to give up. But I wouldn't just
yet. Do some basic diagnostic work. Look at logs from "browstat status",
"ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net config workstation", from each
computer, and diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and
follow instructions precisely (download browstat!):

Ok, it took the entire family to figure it out, and we did it!

1. For the XP computer, I installed the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD)

2. For the Vista computer, I installed this update: Update for Windows Vista
(KB938979)

3. This thread helped to actually connect my printer on the XP computer.

problem was definitely the toughest computer problem I ever faced. Whew!
