Not certain but I think you have to install the printer software or at least
the printer drivers on each computer so your laptop knows how to talk to the
printer with the desktop turned off.

I posted my question like an hour ago, why would you say it's old?!
Thanks Susan, I am downloading the driver now and will see if it works.
Thanks again!

I don't think it will work unless all elements on the path to th
printer are online. You may print to "Microsoft XPS document" (which i
most likely one of your printer options) and then send it to the printe
when it is on-line. Alternatively, you could use doPDF ( 'PDF Converte
- Convert to PDF free with doPDF' (http://www.dopdf.com/) ) which wil
act like a printer and can be selected in the printer window. It wil
also store you print file for later printing (via Adobe or whatever .pd
reader you have)

If your printer is shared through the desktop (i.e. connected directly to
the desktop by USB or a parallel cable), then the desktop must be on in
order to print from the laptop.

The alternative is an Ethernet capable printer that can be connected to
your network directly. If your printer does not have a built in Ethernet
port, you can buy a print server. Ethernet capable printers and print
servers may support wired and/or wireless networking.

Since you say you can already print from the laptop when the desktop is on,
you already have the driver. Downloading it again won't address your
problem.

Yes, but you still need to install those drivers on each computer if you are
going to leave the other computers turned off. The printer drivers are not
installed in the wireless router. It sounds like your print problem is
getting so complicated there may not be any solution.

No, if the printer is physically connected to the desktop PC. If that is
the case, you can purchase a print server, and connect the print server to
your router, then connect the print server to the printer. Alternatively
you can purchase a wireless printer, which will not be physically attached
to either the router or the desktop PC.
