problem with 4.2 and 4.1

Like many here, I am experiencing a problem syncing my WM5 device. I have a
ppc-6700 running wm5. I was able to sync with my office computer until a few
days ago (last friday 6/2/06) and have since been unable to sync. I was
running AS 4.1 and have since upgraded to 4.2b, thinking that it may resolve
the issue. Now, neither installation would allow me to sync via USB, whereas
the sync process worked flawlessly before. I have McAfee personal firewall
and antivirus which I have disabled temporarly - that doesn't help. I
installed and reinstalled AS 4.0, 4.1 and 4.2b ad nauseum. I also tried
restoring windows XP to last month when I know I was able to sync - no help
there either. I'm at my wits end.

You need to start by observing what's actually going on. What doesn't work
is only part of the information necessary to debug a problem. What happens
when you connect the device to the USB port on the computer? If you're
plugging into a USB hub, rather than directly to the PC, does an indicator
light on the hub illuminate? What if you plug the device into a different
USB port or using a different cable? If the USB hardware seems to be
working, is there an entry in the Network Connections (on the Start |
Settings menu), for the Windows Mobile device when you have it plugged in?
If there is, open its properties and verify that Internet Protocol (TCP/IP),
has a check mark beside it. If no network connection appears, let us know
about that.

The device is connected directly into the computer (not through a usb hub).
Windows immediately recognizes it as a "local area connection" and I see it
in Network Connections. TCP/IP check box is checked. When I plug in the
device, the green icon in my sys tray spins and spins, the AS application
says "connecting" but never establishes a connection.

That's virtually always a result of a virtual private network setup, a
firewall, or something of that nature. What other network adapters are
present? Are you using a VPN to connect to work from home or anything? You
might *uninstall* Macafee, rather than disabling it, as we don't know what
that really means (disable might mean, "Allow no connections", or just about
anything else).

The only other network adapter is my ethernet adapter used to connect to the
internet. I am not using a VPN. The machine is a stand alone PC. By
"disabling" McAfee's personal firewall, I mean that the firewall is not
running - there is no "intrusion" protection from outside hackers, etc. I
will try to uninstall McAfee to see if this solves the problem. thanks for
your help so far.

Disconnect from the Internet while MacAfee is uninstalled. That's as secure
as it's going to get. That's what you *think* is happening when MacAfee is
off, but that doesn't mean that their definition of "disable" is the same as
yours. We've seen that with virus programs and AS before.

Seeing problems like this, I wonder if we should stick with 4.1 if it
seems to work just fine?

Obviously that's up to you, but I haven't seen any problems yet that were
caused by 4.2. Various OS changes on the PC, and the usual problems with
third-party programs, firewalls, mostly, are still at the root of most
problems. The AS4.2 installer does a better job than 4.1 of detecting some
of these problems and trying to fix them. It's certainly not perfect,
though...

I asked because I took a hit with the IE7 beta and as in the past I've had a
headache or two with the Axim, I'm thinking why bother while it's still in
beta but, then again, if there's something really dandy about it, I'd
consider the risk. Thanks for the advice.

There are no new features that I've noted. If you have 4.1 and it works and
you don't have any problems with it, no, there's no fancy stuff that you're
missing out on.
