problem accessing the Windows Update, [Error number: 0x80244016]

I am having a problem accessing the Windows Update Centre, I can get as far
as choosing Express Install or Custom Install, but when I click on either of
these after a few moments it comes up with
Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested
page.
and reports that it is an Error number: 0x80244016.
Sometimes it comes up asking me for proxy credentials, but I have no idea
what it is wanting me to type in as I tried my proxy server username and
password and it didn't accept it and went onto the Error number: 0x80244016
page. Does anyone know how I can get round this?
Mark

Hi

If you have Windows XP:

Just a guess, but you might need to configure the WinHTTP proxy settings
on the computer (using e.g. proxycfg.exe).

Open a command prompt (Start/Run and then "cmd.exe" without the
quotes).

Run this command to display current proxy configuration:

proxycfg

For more help on proxycfg.exe:

proxycfg -?

If you configure the client to your proxy "environment" using proxycfg,
does WU start to work then?

get automatic updates now and no problems downloading any updates...
