problem after downloading new updates

I was fortunate? to be able to download all 7 XP update and all 7 Office 2003
updates. However, I know receive IE email with all attachments (didn't
happen before updates), can not use Mcrosoft Updates because this message
occurs: files required to use Microsoft Update are no longer registered or
installed on your computer. To continue: click - register or reinstal the
files for me now. This acts like it installs them, but the same message
appears time after time. Also when i opened my computer after the downloads,
I also received this message: One of the files containing the system's
registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternative copy. The
recovery was successful. What do I do now? Thanks for any help with this
problem.
