Hi everyone
to cut a VERY long story short, i just had my computer reformated back to
its original factory state basically meaning i lost every program that i had
ever installed (oh but i still have the icons hee hee). I lost xp pro, office
2003 to mention a few.

i am back to a very clean and very boring xp home (pre installed) computer.

Last night i went to reinstall office 2003 and it popped up with an error
saying that i needed updates before this installation can take place.
I dont even have xp service pack 1 on my computer - as i mentioned its
completely back to its original state.

so i clicked on microsoft update and my computer was checking for updates
and thats it, nothing happens. it says its done and that is it. I do have
automatic updates on and i changed the time for last night when i was on and
nothign happened. I can not get updates, and without updates i can not
install office 2003 so im completely lost.

does anyone know why i can not get microsoft update to work, no error comes
up it just stops like its finished thinking and that is it. It comes up with
the "this might take a few minutes and click install if any boxes come up"
and that is it.

i was thinking of installing xp pro as at least that has service pack 1 on
it, but i thought there has to be an easier way although i want to install xp
pro to get rid of some of the crappy programs in xp home but that is another
story hee hee.

if anyone has any thought please help me as i soooo badly do need office
2003 on my computer for work purposes. and after all the problems i have had
its driving me insane.
someone gave me the microsoft site to download service pack 2 but it says i
shouldnt do this if im downloading to a stand alone computer in which i am!!
And giving me a site i suppose is not helping me fix the problem in the long
run

how do i get updates!!!! pwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwease

a huge thank you in advance

Hi The Aussie Girl,

Give this a try..........

Go to Start>Run and key in:
net.exe stop wuauserv
Click on OK or hit ENTER

Go to Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 wups.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 jscript.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 atl.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box

Start>Run and key in:
net.exe start wuauserv

Now try the Windows Update site.

Alternatively, you could create a command script file to run the above
commands in a Command Prompt window......

Go to Start>Run
Key in:
cmd
Click on OK or hit ENTER

In the Command Prompt window, key in:
notepad registerit.cmd
Hit ENTER

A Notepad window will open with a dialogue box asking if you want to create
a new file. Click on Yes in the dialogue box.

Copy/paste the following, between but not including the asterisks, into the
Notepad window:

*********************
net stop wuauserv

regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll

regsvr32 /s wups.dll

regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll

regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll

regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll

regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll

regsvr32 /s jscript.dll

regsvr32 /s atl.dll

regsvr32 /s softpub.dll

net start wuauserv
**********************

When finished pasting the above commands into the Notepad window, go to
File>Save then File>Exit.

Back in the Command Prompt window, key in:
registerit.cmd
Then hit ENTER

When the file is done running, and you're back at the C: prompt, key in:
exit
Then hit ENTER

Now try the Windows Update site.

As for downloading SP2, the recommendation not to use that full download if
installing to a standalone computer is due to the fact that the full install
file is a fair size, and if you have a connection to the internet that is
not broadband, the download could take a looooooong time (and you may get
disconnected during that time)........therefore, if you have a slow
connection, it may not be worth the time downloading if you're only
installing it to one computer.

wow that is very long hee hee.
i printed it out and a huge thank you - i will try it when i get home thank
you very much Patti for your time

it makes it very difficult to install office 2003 when your computer needs
updates but you cant get updates. Although i must admit its very nice to have
a very fast totally clean computer (without many programs what so ever tho)

You're very welcome :-)

Yes, I know it is quite long, but when I have posted the "Reader's Digest"
version (where I spell out what to do with wuapi.dll and then say "do the
same for the following dll files"), inevitably a number of people leave out
the "regsvr32" portion of the command , or try to "net stop" the other dll
files, and I end up having to spell it all out anyway.

Good luck, and let me know how you fare when try it.
