problem attaching files in MSN

My friend is running XP SP2. He got an update alert saying
updates had been downloaded which, if run, would speed up
his computer. He clicked "Yes".
Now his home page has been changed from Google to his
hotmail email address, whic is OK, but also, he has a problem
with attachments. He creates a new email, clicks on "Attach a
file". No matter what file - doc, text, anything, if he says attach
file abc.somthing, he gets a popup "abc.lnk: for your security
and the computer security, you are not allowed to attach this file".
Can anyone suggest any way of resolving this?

Going just by that - your friend installed spyware/adware/malware. It needs
to be cleaned up.
