Request for help - Autoupdate needs a good kicking...
Autoupdate tried to install a batch of updates at 06:33 UK time this morning - Media Player 10 for Windows XP (KB917734) Security Update for Windows XP (KB914389) Security Update for Windows XP (KB917344) Security Update for Windows XP (KB918439) Security Update for Windows XP (KB911280) Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP (KB916281) Security Update for Windows XP (KB917953) Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - June 2006 (KB890830) Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB917149) Security Update for Word 2003 (KB917334) All updates appear to have downloaded okay but the install process never finishes. When I attempt to shutdown the pc it loops on the blue update screen proclaiming that it is "installing update 1 of 11..." and never completes. If I attempt to install updates from http://update.microsoft.com (either express or custom doing one at a time) I get the error message "Problem: Automatic Updates is currently installing updates". There must be a stupid flag somewhere that thinks something is still going on when it isn't. Log files for KB's 914389, 916281, 917344, 917953 & 918439 exist from this morning's abortive attempt. The contents of your DataStore folder may be the problem.
1. Delete the contents of the DataStore folder. 2. Click Start. 3. Choose Run. 4. In the Run box, type: %windir%\SoftwareDistribution 5. Click OK. 6. Open the DataStore folder. 7. Delete all contents of the DataStore folder. 8. Close the window. 9. Reboot and revisit the Windows Update web site. I had the same problem and inadvertantly solved it by downloading the updates
individually, using the custom install option. The problem seems to be with the Windows Media 10 update. It refused to load until some of the other security patches were installed. Don't bother calling tech support about this. They are worse than useless. Phil,
Both of the KBxxxxxx.logs that you posted contains this entry : 0.985: Source:C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\symlcsv1.exe (1.8.54.534) symlcsv1.exe in that location indicates that the system is infected. Strongly suggest that you read this tutorial : http://forum.aumha.org/viewtopic.php...e266ab50f5eea7 And then have the system scanned by Kaspersky's Online Scanner : http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner When you find out what malware is detected, suggest you post to a reputable anti-malware forum for further assistance.
