Problem with compacting folders in outlook express after updates

I recently downloaded the updates for windowsXP ( I have windowsXPpro
service pack 2) and I just discovered that when I compact the folders in
Outlook Express that a .bak file for each folder is sent to the recycle
bin.. I did a google search to find out what these files are and found
this:

In DOS systems, a file with a.BAK extension, indicates that the file is a
backup. Many applications produce BAK files as part of their autosave
procedure. Periodically, you may want to search for BAK files and delete old
ones

Can anyone direct me to the appropriate place to report this?

You need to post this to the experts in the Outlook Express newsgroup.

The new behavior is by design with the latest update for OE. When
compacting the files, it does backups. They can be deleted.

It also sets the count back to zero so you don't get that pop up every
100 times that you close OE.

Thanks Alias,
I've always compacted my folders at the end of every day so I never got that
popup... but it's nice to know anyway. :-))

Until the new update that backs up your .dbx files, the pop up would
appear no matter how many times you had compacted. My guess is that you
didn't close OE 100 times after installing SP2.

LOLOL,
I've closed it much more than 100 times because I've had SP2 for about 2
years now and open and close OE at least 3 times daily... I belong to a
stationery news group and several PSP groups so I do a lot with OE. Either
my prompt doesn't work or if it had a "don't tell me this again" option I
clicked it.

You're lucky you didn't lose any messages because after every 100
closings, it was compacting without you knowing it.

? I haven't noticed that compacting removed messages.. As far as I can
tell they stay unless I remove them using the "cleanup" options or check
the options to have them deleted when I close OE ... but I have all of
those options unchecked.

If you had rebooted or if a power failure had happened when it was
compacting, you would have lost all your messages. You do have a back up
program for OE, right?
