Part 1 of my reply: Is this Windows 98? Please reply.

You have actually 2 problems. First begins with an error 80092026 -- which translates to -- "The cryptographic operation failed due to a local security option setting".

The second error 800B0004 is a Trust error in downloading iuident.cab from Windows Update and putting it into folder
C:\Programmi\WindowsUpdate\V4\temp.

Look at that folder & see what is in it. Anything in the \V4\temp folder can & should be deleted.

Regarding your 800B0004 error -- I'm going to pass on a direct quote from Lucy at Microsoft.
<Quote>
This is a trust error. We need to make sure we have disabled all Antivirus
and web enhancement/accelerator programs. Also please verify the following:

Next navigate to Trusted Sites.
Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Security

Select "Trusted Sites"
Select "Sites"

*Uncheck* the "Require Server Verification" option

Add the following:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.com
Click Apply, then Ok Exit Internet Explorer

Verify the following folder is not Read only and has Full Control permission
for Everyone
C:\program files\windwosupdate\v4\temp

Perform a Selective Startup:
Start > Run
Type "msconfig" (without quotes)
On the Startup Tab,
De-Select all items - disable all
Click Apply, then OK
Reboot, and try Windows Update again.

If error persists, please post the Windows Update.log file.
</end quote>

Please do post back with your progress / status.

Help! I am having the same problem it started on yesterday. I have emailed
support for help as well.

I can't access any updates on the windows update site nor can i access
symantec via the internet. I have Windows XP and Norton Antivirus 2003 which
is updated as updates come in. I called symantec and they told me to uprade
to 2005 but I can't get on their site to upgrade.

All security is disabled and everytime I try to enable I get error messages.
Whatever I opened shut down all SECURITY. I CANNOT enable updates or
firewall, etc.

I did write down one error code I received 0X8DDD0018.

I'm online looking for help unprotected. What is this a virus? What do I do?

Do see this MS Article - ID # 883614 -- http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;883614

Your error exception is 0X8DDD0018. What it indicates is that Automatic Updates could be disabled, or Not started; or that
Background Intelligent Transfer Service could be disabled or Not started.

You must make sure these Win XP services are enabled and running:

Automatic Updates
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
Cryptographic Services
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
System Restore Service

Go to Start menu >Run > MSCONFIG <enter>
Click on the "Services" Tab & review these services. They should have a green "tick/check" mark on left; and status "Running" on the far right.

Lastly, you need to have either a 3rd-party firewall or XP's firewall ON, and, have a good/current antivirus on. Don't go on the net without them!

Do you think or have an indication this pc was infected? or did you recently clean up after an infection? if yes, which virus / malware?

Are you having a problem reaching other websites ? (besides MS or Symantec)

Yes, I got a red alert from Norton saying Malicious something. I can't get
onto Mcafee's site either. The screen says "cannot find server". Whatever
this thing is blocks anything related to security.

This just happened yesterday after I opened an email from a familiar email.
I should have known better I guess. I was a zip file entitled jokes and once
I opened the file it said "sorry" then all security services were disabled.

Is my computer going to die?

Thanks Maurice! You said:

I checked and everything is checked but some of them have been stopped and
are not running. Something is stopping my security from functioning.

Hello Ben

Very nicely written/presented/researched. I took notice and I am sure others
did also. But it did not address the OP's issue.
