problem connecting with dial-up

I use a desktop, and do not have a wireless or router, yet I started receiving the message, a cable is not plugged into network adapter "Local Area Connection". I have dial-up service through copper.net. Before this problem started, I had uninstalled my anti virus program because of problems, could something have happened during that process?
