This may not be a vista problem but I think you guys might be able to
help.

At home I have a file server ( Its named Bigred)running windows xp pro.
I am using simple file sharing on the network. Its not on a domain its
on a workgroup. The only software I have running on it is tversity and
utorrent. On my vista machine or any other computer, I cannot connect to
\\bigred\ through explorer, but if I add in a share name \\bigred\photos
it works just fine. What the hell is going on and how do I fix it?

Windows xp was just installed today with all updates.

Same account name on all machines? Same workgroup name on all machines?
What firewall are you using on the XP server?

same workgroup on all machines, no firewall on the xp serve

as for account name I don't think that comes into play with simple fil
sharing. I even tried to connect to it from another windows xp machin
and a multimedia streaming device that is smb compatable. No luck wit
either. I wan't any body within the local network to access these share
folders without complications

Hi
Make sure that the Software Firewall on each computer allows free local
traffic. If you use 3rd party Firewall On, Vista/XP Native Firewall should
be Off, and the active Firewall has to adjusted to your Network IP numbers
on what is some time called the Trusted Zone (consult your 3rd Party
Firewall instructions.

The most likely problem is that the registry entry that allows
browsing the computer has the wrong value. Run the registry editor on
Bigred and open this key:

HLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA

Set the value of RestrictAnonymous to 0. Reboot and try accessing the
Bigred again.

Thanks alot. I don't need it now but I will print this out and hang on
to it just incase.

Here is the thing: I ended up solving the problem by reinstalling
windows and setting everything up. It was no big deal. I have had this
problem before for the last 2 months, so I spent all day yesterday
reinstalling windows on big red to get rid of the problem. When this
problem popped back up after installing updates I made this thread and
start searching for a solution. I soon gave up and reinstalled windows
the second time. It was only then did I saw your solution. I wish I
started this thread a while back.

Its all good.
