Problem:Continuous syncing of Favorites and Avantgo

Activesync continuously syncs my Mobile favorites and my Avantgo Channels
while connected to my PDA. I have Activesync set to only sync on connection
(under options, schedule). Pages from my favorites also automatically delete
after I view the downloaded site.
I would like Activesync to sync to my Favorites and Avantgo Channels only
when first connected and for the Favorites pages to remain until the next
sync.
Any ideas?

I have Activesync 3.7.1 (build 4034) installed on a Dell Axim(416) with
Windows Mobile 2003 SE version 4.21.1088(Build 14260.2.0.5)

Hi,
ActiveSync does not offer this level of flexibility in choosing when you
sync. It's all or nothing as far as synchronization goes each time you
choose an option such as continuous sync.

I have the same issue w/Avantgo, & I've determined it's just a few of my
channels that are apparently updated continuously (news channels) that are
causing it--that, and AVGo's decision to set their software to check for
updates every time any other sync'd item updates. Unfortunately, AvantGo
hasn't bothered to provide any control over sync sched. for their product,
and ultimately this is a deficit of their product and our efforts would
probably be best directed towards them on this issue (I've found their PDA
version strangely lacking compared to the product on other platforms--no
full-screen mode, minimal font-size control, no zoom...but that's another
issue...). I've dealt with this two ways:

1) I update AvantGo once a day, when I first sync PPC & PC in the morning.
Then I click Options and clear the check box next to AvantGo so it's not
included in any more sync's that day. Unfortunately there's no way to
accomplish this other than manually, and ea. morning I have to check the
AvantGo box, sync once & then clear it for the rest of the day.

2) I've moved most of the subscriptions that I've determined to be constant
updaters over to MobiPocket's eNews service, which works pretty much just
like AvantGo, usually looks better (layout-wise) and has a full-screen mode,
unlike AvantGo (PPC)--and most importantly, has controls that enable you to
restrict updates to once every however-many-hours you choose. I have mine
set to every twelve hours, so I get the same result as I do manually
w/AvantGo (one or two updates a day), but automatically. MobiPocket
MobiReader is free, offers most of the same channels as AvantGo (news, @
least) and you can manually add any site not on their lists. And unlike
AvantGo, the only size restriction is how much free space you have available
on your device (& how long you're willing to wait for an update, of course).

Like AvantGo channels, Favorites only update (at least on my system) when
something changes. If you tend to add lots of Favorites as bookmarks while
you surf, and if you save them to Mobile Favorites, ActiveSync will update
your device every time you add or delete (or move) one of those favorites. I
don't add & delete fav's a lot on my PPC, so I do pretty much the same as
with AvantGo: I keep them unchecked and turn them on & back off manually
only when I've added links on the PPC that I want on the desktop or
vice-versa.

As an aside, I wonder why this continues to be an issue after all these
"improved" releases of ActiveSync. Favorites seem to be uniquely badly
handled, far less efficiently for some reason. Add an Outlook entry or a
new Word file and they're added individually, one at a time, in a second
flat; but for some reason every addtition to Favorites seems to require
going through every last one of them every time. If MS would put a little
more effort into finding a way to avoid that behavior we wouldn't be wasting
our time talking about what a waste of time that is, lol. I don't mind a
2-second pause to add a new meeting or update a spreadsheet, but a full
minute-long sync of every last Favorite every time you change just one of
them becomes pretty irritating pretty fast!

I don't do any offline Favorites, but if you do, you can set the update
interval for ea. Favorite individually, in the Favorites' control itself
(right-click the Favorite...). Just as with AVGo, determine which Favorites
are getting updated too often and set those Favorites' update-interval to a
longer period.

I know these aren't the simple, automatic set-it-&-forget-it answers you
were probably looking for, but I don't see many alternatives until AvantGo
bothers to take a few minutes to add some Settings to their product's
ActiveSync Options so we can control update times, or MS writes a better
sync routine for bookmarks. If anyone else has other ideas I'd like to hear
them too.

Actually there IS one way to avoid changing settings every day for
individual items, and it may be what you were asking for in the first place
(NOW I think of this ; problem is, it's a global solution, and might not
be acceptable if you constantly update other stuff that you want updated
immediately on the PPC. You can click Options, choose the Schedule tab &
change the option for Desktop Schedule, where it says, "When connected to my
PC sync..." from the usual Continuously setting to Manually or, as you asked
about, On Connection. With the latter AS will only sync everything once
when you first place your device in the cradle (or connect wirelessly), and
not again until you've removed/disconnected & reconnect the device (or start
a sync manually). Maybe changing that setting and then manually initiating
a sync before you remove your device from the cradle will give you the right
balance between auto- & manual sync....
