I want to upgrade to SP2 and have performed all the necessary requirements.
When I follow the download SP2 link on the Microsoft download centre page it
opens a new window which asks me to check to see if you need updates for
windows, your programmes your updates or your devices. It gives me two
options Express or Custom. I choose the recommended option Express it then
begins checking for the latest updates, problem is it keeps on checking. I
left it for at least an hour but when I returned to my screen it was still
checking for updates.

Please help as I am getting very frustrated, I spent hours configuring my pc
so that I can upgrade to SP2 and now it doesn’t seem to work

Thank you

Is WinXP SP1 installed?

If you just reinstalled Windows or did a Repair Install, see

Otherwise, see

Hi

Yes SP1 is installed.
I am not very good with computers so i have a few questions. How do I do a
repair install and do I need a windows CD, if yes this may be a problem as I
did not get a CD when I purchased my PC it already came fully installed with
windows
2nd If I do a repair install would i need to reinstall all my additional
software and applications?

Thank you very much for your help

Don't cross the bridges until you come to them, please. <wink> See if the
references I cited help to get SP2 installed.

NB: If the machine's running WinXP SP1 without problems and is 100% free of
any/all hijackware infections, you can avoid installing quite a number of
updates by installing WinXP SP3 manually instead of SP2.

WinXP SP3 Direct Download (316.4 MB):

WinXP SP3 - Read all prerequisites for a successful installation
http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldron...tallation.aspx

Steps to take before you install WinXP SP3
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717

<IMHO>
Temporarily disable all real-time protections afforded by your anti-virus
application, any anti-spyware applications, and any third-party firewall
prior to installing SP2 or SP3. If you disable a third-party firewall, make
sure you then enable the Windows Firewall: The machine should not be
connected to the internet without an active firewall.

NB ZA Free users: Uninstall ZA Free via Add/Remove Programs and enable the
Windows Firewall before installing SP2 or SP3.

After installing SP2 or SP3 /and rebooting twice/, check to make sure your
real-time protections have been re-enabled; If you disabled a third-party
firewall, remember to re-enable it and disable the Windows Firewall.
</IMHO>
