Problem Getting USB Mouse Connection to Work on Server 2008

I have a PS/2 Keyboard and a PS/2 Mouse connected to a Linkskey LKV-248AUSX switch. The switch
provides a PS/2 to USB conversion for both the keyboard and the mouse.

I have installed Server 2008 64 bit with Hyper-V on a system with a ASUS M3A78-EM motherboard and an
AMD Athlon64 X2 AM2 CPU. The system has 8GB of RAM.

If I use just a USB cable between the Linkskey switch and the computer the motherboard sees both the
keyboard and the mouse during post. Server 2008 sees both a USB keyboard and a USB Mouse. Device
Manager says the mouse is working but the system ignores it. That is I cannot move the pointer with
the mouse. If I connect the PS/2 cable from the Linkskey switch to the "combined" PS/2 port on the
motherboard Server 2008 sees the mouse.

If I use a splitter cable to attach both the PS/2 keyboard and PS/2 mouse cables to the "combined"
PS/2 port on the motherboard Server 2008 only sees the keyboard.

I have been able to get both the keyboard and the mouse working at the same time by connecting both
the USB cable to the machine and the PS/2 mouse cable to the "combined" PS/2 port. Server 2008 sees
two mice -- a USB one and a PS/2 one.

Are there any known problems with using a single USB cable for both a keyboard and a mouse with
Server 2008?

I had that setup for a while, but not a Linksys switch.
The only problem I had was at power up neither the keyboard nor the
mouse would work until about 5 seconds after hitting any key on the
keyboard.
No errors in the event log either.
Same w/ XP and Vista boxes and this switch.
I had another switch that was hit & miss with either both working or not
at all.

I saw that but it seems to come and go.

I had problems with the switch and a ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe board and XP using the PS/2 connections.
If I switched away from the box and then back the mouse was dead. I switched to the USB connection
and all worked well.

My concern with using the USB and PS/2 connection is that this is a development box and I will be
running a number of virtual machines on it and am somewhat concerned that they will be as confused
as Server 2008.
