Uninstall all Norton related programs and files. Use the below tool to remove
everything and then use Avast or Avira which does not leave such a big footprint .

Norton Removal Tool

The thing is you and I would know what we should do first, like being
prepared with a back up antivirus before going back online.

But a lot of these posters have such a low level of computer understanding -
and I'm not saying they are stupid but for some reason, (possibly because of
the forum sites they use) they are not moving up the learning curve.

I wasn't aiming my reply at you so much as trying to stop 100's of the above
mentioned users taking off Norton and surfing the web unprotected.

I haven't tried Avast yet so don't feel qualified to recommend it.

Do you think AVG has had its day?? Thus far its never let me down.

I've got AVG on several of my computers and yes, I do think it may be
getting 'sloppier'. When I first started using AVG it would run crisply
and finish scans in a reasonable amount of time. Now, on the same
computer (and, granted, I may have installed more programs on it) it
appears to run rather sluggishly. 5 out of 10 times when I reboot or
start the computer AVG will fail to connect to it's update server and
blame ME for the failure ("Your Internet connection is down" or "You
computer is not connect to the Internet" - that sort of garbage).

I've tried Avast on one of my computers, but since I did it only two
days ago I'm not really ready for an opinion. I do think it updates far
easier than AVG.

I think the update problem is due to its popularity - sheer numbers of
people trying to update. Mines set to update at 02:00 and it doesn't fail
very often.

On the scan page you can adjust the scan priority, there's a slider.

I suppose only using 1 computer at the moment I'm in the "if it ain't broke
don't fix it" situation.

Oh, yeah. I'm a HUGE fan of IIABDFI. Been that way for 40 years.
