I had trouble installing this update for a long time. It would hang on
my Windows 2000 Pro machine. Eventually I was able to do it by killing
the "WMDM PMSP Service" while I installed the update (on my w2k
machine, Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > Find and
Kill "WMDM PMSP Service").

Brian, I read your two posts of 7/8/06 concerning the Media Play 10 KB917734
failure to complete the update process. All of the other updates in the
bundle worked fine. I used both the Express and Custom options with same
results. I am running WXP Pro on my Compaq notebook. When you write of
"killing the WMDM PMSP Service" briefly what are you doing here? I should be
able to follow your steps to get to the file. Will I need to repeat the
process to un-kill it? Or would it just be easier for this novice to delete
Media Player 10 and be done with it?
thank you very much. frank

Well my situation was on Windows 2000 Pro, not XP Pro, so it may not
apply to your problem. But you can try it to see if it solves the
problem for you.
