i'm having some trouble with the hotfixes which you can download from the
microsoft site. I'll start at the beginning. I just got myself a new usb
stick (Freecom 8gb). It is vista compatible so i thought it would work
without problems. I was wrong. Vista would locate the stick and even find
drivers but when it got to the installing part it gives an error message that
something went wrong. Vista did found a solution for this. I had to download
a hot fix update for my (IM SURE, DOUBLECHECKED) 32bit vista system. When i
downloaded the hotfix and tried to install it i got the message, "the update
is not valid for your system". So like i allways do i check the internet for
solutions but this time i couldn't find an awnser. Most forums say that you
get this message when the update/hotfix is already installed. so i looked at
my installed updates but couldnt find the update that i tried to install
before. So that was not the solution to my problem. Then i started searching
for awnsers on the microsoft site. I found 2 solutions but unlucky as i am
they didn't help. The first one was to change the msconfig so that vista
would start with nothing but te standard windows applications and services.
Didn't work. The other one was a 2nd hotfix. Only this was zipped and the
password that was given to get to te update didn't work for me. I have no
idea what i could do to solve this problem so i can get on with the next. plz
help

What is the hotfix number? Do you have service pack 1 installed?

You may need to take this up with the manufacturer of the USB stick.

The hotfix number is KB940199 and yes i have Vista SP1 installed. The USB
stick does work on my laptop which also has a 32bit system and SP1 installed.
I mailed the manufacturer for help but they couldnt give me actual help. They
said i had to try some stuff in my BIOS and i tried some things but didn't
help out. They did give me a directory where the driver should be found and
which i had to specify for the system. So now the computer can find the
driver but keeps giving the error that it cant install it. So im back with
the hotfix KB940199 (and several other updates/hotfixes i want to install)
that do not work because of the "update is not valid for your system" message
given by the system.

tnx for replieing

KB940199 is included in service pack 1, so it is normal for it to refuse to install.

What is the exact error message? I suggest you ask in one of the Windows Vista
newsgroups/forums as this is not really a Windows Update issue.

It may be that the driver simply doesn't support SP1. Have you checked for a
more recent driver that might be available on the manufacturers web site?

I'm having the exact problem with Windows Vista. It's failed to recognize and
install pretty much all plug and play USB devices so far. It's definitely
KB940199 hotfix that I need because I looked up the about the fix and it
describes it perfectly:

KB940199

Error message when you try to install a new hardware device on a Windows
Vista-based computer: "Windows encountered a problem installing the driver
software for your device"

SYMPTOMS
When you try to install a new hardware device on a Windows Vista-based
computer, Windows Vista cannot install the driver for the hardware device
successfully. Additionally, you may sometimes receive the following error
message:
Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your
device. Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an
error while attempting to install it.
Device_Name
This problem occurs if the Infcache.1 file that is in the %Windir%\System32
folder is deleted or corrupted.

CAUSE
If the Infcache.1 file is deleted or corrupted, Windows Vista does not
re-create the Infcache.1 file.

RESOLUTION
Service pack information
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows Vista.

I have the exact same problem with this hotfix, i.e. it says:
"Does not apply to your system"

I wish the Microsoft MVP were a little smarter in assesing their replies.
Its ok to say "I don't know" and rather say that than asking silly questions
that have no bearing on the subject matter.

I'm not the only one that has problems with external P&P devices, such as
smart cards, digital camera via USB and now my mouse via USB too.

And do you have service pack 1 installed?

Actually, there wouldn't be all that much point in responding to a question if
you don't either (a) know the answer or (b) have a question to ask. Since I'm
the only person who has responding to the original poster, I assume I'm the MVP
you're talking about, and I've asked exactly four questions:

The first was "What is the hotfix number?" which is obviously relevant to a
problem with a hotfix; the second was "Do you have service pack 1 installed"
since this determines which hotfixes apply; the third was "What is the exact
error message" which is always relevant to *any* problem on a computer; the
fourth was "Have you checked for a more recent driver that might be available on
the manufacturers web site?" which is obviously relevant to a driver
installation issue; so, on the whole, I'm not sure what you're going on about.

Doesn't really sound like a Windows Update problem. I suggest you start a new
thread in one of the Windows Vista newsgroups, although if you want anyone to
try to help you'd be well advised to drop the attitude first. (You do know
we're volunteers, and not Microsoft employees, right?)

Harry, Harry, Harry....

Thank you for your answers to my comments, including my comments that may
seem rude.
I was not referring to you as the MVP, I've read other posts and so it was
not you in particular.
For whatever its worth, I do apologise if you were offended or taken my
comments personally, I was not intending to "attack" any MVP. Of course any
comments/questions, even ones that have no value from a MVP is better than no
reply at all.

I have managed to find out the problem AND solved it, but no thanks to any
MVP for that. (meant sincerely, not condenscendingly)

You are also incorrect in your assumption about it not relating to a windows
update.
It IS a windows update problem.
I have never posted anything in a Microsoft forum before, because I can 99%
of the time work out the issues myself. But a good deal of time was spent
sorting this out and I believe I have the total solution.

I'm willing to offer my solution here, so others can enjoy it, without me
asking silly questions

The problem with Service Pack 1 is that it "disables" auto-installing USB
drivers from that point on.
For e.g.
-Install Service pack 1
-Install a USB device, such as camera, smart card reader e.t.c
It won't work, cannot detect smart card reader.
You also are not allowed to install hotfix to correct the errors, as the
hotfix says "does not apply to your system"

To counter this error, do the following:
-Uninstall service pack 1
-Then install USB devices, get them going 100%
-Reinstall service pack 1
-Problem solved!

I think Microsoft should be more COHERENT about this problem, as how many
people around the globe use cameras e.t.c
It was disgustingly hard to find this solution and it didn't even come from
Microsoft!

Harry, I thought you were a "paid representative" from MS. I appreciate
MS-approved-working-for-free people who try to help. So thank you for your
time taken to read my "insults" and STILL having patience to ask questions
and TRY to offer some assistance.

I just think that this problem is SO obvious that there should have been
something done about it eons ago.

About the product homepage for a driver update:
MOST manufactures these days state "no driver necessary, works with Windows
automatically".
This is the trend, the norm of this generation.
Only back in Windows95 & 98 was this more or less relevant.
Here I'm talking about USB devices, not internal components such as graphics
cards e.t.c

Anyway, just to let you know, your reply to me was not in vain, so thank you
again, so have a nice day
André

[Cross-posted to windows.vista.hardware_devices as someone there may already
know about this problem, or if not may be interested in the suggested workaround.]

Not as far as I can see; from what you've said it relates to Vista SP1 ... this
is a windows update but it is not Windows Update, if you follow the distinction.
It presumably wouldn't matter whether you'd installed SP1 via Windows Update,
manually, or whether it came preinstalled on your PC. Not that it matters, of
course; I'm just being pedantic at this point. :-)

I can't argue with this convincingly, because we're still an XP shop, but I find
it hard to believe that this is a universal condition. Certainly it's a problem
which should be reported; I appreciate you've probably spent more time on this
already than you want to, and have the problem fixed, but if anyone else is
having the same issue I'd suggest trying the free SP1 support (available until
March 18, 2009):

<http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/quick-start/sp1.aspx>

Or you could ask for support from the hardware manufacturer and/or retailer,
particularly if it is a new device.

> You also are not allowed to install hotfix to correct the errors, as the

The hotfix in question fixes a specific bug in the initial release of Windows
Vista, a bug which isn't present in service pack 1. The symptoms may be the
same or similar, but it isn't the same bug.

Thanks for providing this suggestion, although there should be a better
solution. (In particular, this won't help those with new computers as SP1 will
have been preinstalled with the OS and so won't be removable.)

I think if it was happening to everyone it would have been! It may be an issue
with specific USB devices, or more likely with specific USB controllers,
motherboard designs, or whatever. (It might also relate to third-party
software, but in this context that seems less likely.)

Well, I'll jump into the middle of this just to say that SP1 screwed up my
USB devices as well. I tried all the workarounds and nothing worked until I
uninstalled SP1 (that's all - no other hot fixes) and my USB devices started
working perfectly again. By "USB devices" I mean such "non-standard" devices
as a Creative Zen Vision M (natively supported by Vista so there are no
drivers as such) and an Epson multifunction printer. Yes, I'm being
sarcastic. SP1 is a steaming turd and should be fixed, or at least the
problem should be openly acknowledged by Microsoft. Once people know that
the "patch" is the problem, you'll see that many people have this problem.
There are lots of people like my friend that think its just normal for them
to have to reinstall USB devices everytime they reboot. They have the bug
and think it's normal. What does that say about Windows in general?
