Problem installing Windows XML Update (KB927978 AND 925672)

I'm using Windows Vista Business and when I tried to install the updates, it
gave me the error CODE 64C. That's all it says.

I've logged in using the domain administrator (Username Administrator) as
well as the local administrator (Username Administrator) and it still gives
me the errors.

Any clues? Thanks.

Steve,

Were you prompted to install these updates on Vista Business ?
There should be no need for these updates on Vista according to the
Operating Systems listed here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Hi, MowGreen.

Thanks for the link. Yes, I was prompted to. In fact, it keeps popping up
as critical updates.

After looking at the link, the only two reasons why I think it's asking me
to do this are:

1) I upgraded from XP SP2.
2) I have Visual Studio 6 installed.

Would those have anything to do with that?

Thanks again.

Steve,

I'm not sure why the update is being offered. Was VS 6 already installed
when the system was upgraded to Vista ?
AFAIK, the update is offered when a detected file/registry setting needs
to be updated. This is the first I've heard of a Vista system being
offered KB927978 and KB925672.

Was any printer/ all-in-one software installed after upgrading to Vista?

MowGreen,

Yes, VS6 was already installed when I upgraded to Vista. There was a
network printer driver that was installed (Canon MFC 7500 series) that didn't
come with XP. I got that driver from the CD that came with the printer.

Thanks for your help with this.

Steve,

You're mowst welcome. I've seen that behavior when installing the
software for my Canon all-in-one, too, but it was in XP. IOW, MSXML 4
was not installed but after installing the all-in-one software, AU
detected that KB927978 was now needed. Not quite sure what to make of
this as an OP who also updated to Vista has stated he has the same issue.

Suggest you attempt to locate msxml4.dll and right click it, choose
Properties, and then Version to see if it needs updating or not.
The file contained in the update is at Version 4.20.9841.0
If the file on the system is the same Version, you could attempt to
reregister it by going to Start > Run > then type in

regsvr32 msxml4.dll

Click OK or press Enter

Frankly, Vista is *not* on the System Requirements OS list on the
download page which I posted the link to. Perhaps that page needs some
editing, eh ? <w>

Mow,

I was able to resolve it by deleting MSXML4.DLL from the Windows System32
directory. I guess if one of the software programs I have installed needs
it, it'll install it.

Thanks for your help.

Steve,

you're mowst welcome. I'm fairly certain msxml4.dll was installed by
Canon. If you have a functionality issue with the Canon, suggest you
reinstall the Canon software. Then download the MSXML update manually
and save it:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Right click it and choose Run as administrator.
Hopefully, that will get it installed properly.
