I had to do a repair install of XP to get back to a working system from this update 867801. This is
the first time in a long while that an update has done this to me.

Most worryingly it was not possible to get into safe mode because I just kept of getting fatal
errors in Explorer.exe ... so no desktop.

I really wish Windows had a system restore facility available from CD or floppy boot - it would make
life a heck of a lot more comfortable when these unbootable issues crop up.

I had to ctrl+alt+del to get to taskmanager and then go to shutdown and click on restart. Once I restarted I hit F8 to get into safe mode to do a system restore. I have my updates configured to notify me before installing so I can set a restore point just in case something like this happens.

Unfortunately in my instance the desktop shell would not load so safe mode wouldn't work either. Was
*very* frustrating since I also had an issue trying to figure out my internet connection after the
reinstall so that it could re-activate successfully. I eventually had to change a machine to host an
internet proxy to get it to work.

Still .. this isn't helping your specific issue - I just thought I'd add to the weight of concern
about this update.

Another option is to try Safe Mode with command prompt. Then run system
restore from the command line:

C:\Windows\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Hmm - I wasn't aware of that.

I'll bear that in mind next time.
