I thanks you for the return.
KB893351 was installed in 02-May-2005 by WinUp with my current card working.
The driver security catalog, not sign by MS, is dated March/2000.
KB917021_v3 is an update for KB893357.
The purpose of KB917021_v3 is described as:
>>This article describes the Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2)/Wireless
>>Provisioning Services Information Element (WPS IE) Update. A link to
>>download this update is included. You can install this update on a
>>computer that is running Windows XP with Service Pack 2. The update

INTRODUCTION
The Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2)/Wireless Provisioning Services
Information Element (WPS IE) Update for computers that are running Microsoft
Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) is available. This update enhances the
Windows XP wireless client software with support for the new Wi-Fi Alliance
certification for wireless security. The update also makes it easier to
connect to secure public spaces that are equipped with wireless Internet
access. These locations are otherwise known as "Wi-Fi hotspots."<<
I did see what you are showing me:
>> You do not have to install the WPA2 Information Element Update on
>> computers that have
>> Windows XP Service Pack 2 and the Wireless Client Update installed.
This certainly confuses the reason for an update.
Yes, I do believe there is a conflict with my old not-MS-certified driver,
I am not sure if this protocol IEEE 802.11i in KB893351 is supported by my
card, but it is not a problem. You could say the driver is even LESS
CERTIFIED with KB917021, perhaps because of new security for a protocol
previously present, that was never tested by SMC.
>>The update supports the additional mandatory security features of the IEEE
>>802.11i<<
My aim was to improve the display of hidden Service Set Identifiers (SSIDs)
in my system. But having failed on that, it was also to forewarn others that
might have a similar issue.
Cheers
