I had this problem as well. After reading all the posts, I turned th
mouse over, turned to OFF position, pressed the reset button and place
back on the charge cradle

Before it was going red after the initial 8 or so green pulses. No
(it's been 45 minutes), it is pulsing green, and seems to be charging

Hope this helps

There is a much easier fix that will only require you to open th
battery compartment once and only once

Microsoft and whomever they have contracted to build the batteries ha
the same issue with the 7000 series as well and this is a fix Ive use
on all the 7000 series Ive ran across

First take a piece of paper and cut a strip slightly under the lengt
of the battery itsel

Then wrap this strip around the battery 2 to 3 times and cut off th
excess length and tape it into place to keep it from unrollin

Replace battery into compartment and test - it now should be th
appropriate thickness needed to depress the sensor switch within th
compartment and verify to the mouse itself a battery is indee
installed, THAT is the reason for the flashing red light, Microsof
contracted with a company that built a series of batteries that are to
thin and do not depress the switch and the wonderful QA department neve
caught it and obviously marketing figures it is more cost efficient t
continue to sell these units with an improperly designed battery tha
re-build and replace all of them already shippe

Hope that help

Last week (after 400+days from the day of the original posting) the
problem reappeared and rolling the battery and cleaning the contacts did
not help. So, what I have discovered is that this is the battery that is
going flat and does not respond well enough.

To solve the problem you need to repeat the procedure of removing the
mouse from the charging cradle and placing it back and waiting until
after green light, the red goes on, until the green finally stays and
charges till the end. As far as I understand, the short charges that the
battery gets during these times makes it finally get enough energy to
respond and keep the charging process on. Otherwise it is too weak to
tell to the cradle that it actually there. A manufacturing flaw but at
least I find a workaround.
