A problem no one seems to have the answer to.. Contacts always off

Ive tried the reg fix - I've tried deleting the folders of everything
associated with MSN (messengers, everything) and re-installing. I've even
tried installing old versions clear back to 7.0. Still, nothing works.

Ive searched the forums for days - multiple forums - and I'm left with
nothing but frustration.

The problem is this - last friday the windows update clusterfarked my
computer while MSN Live 8 was online, and it signed me out - just like
everyone else is having problems with.

But this problem is much more annoying. It will let me sign in, but all my
contacts appear offline. Always offline, even when I'm talking to them on the
phone and they are online.

I am computer savvy, and I do programming for websites in my spare time -
but I've never seen anything like this.

Ive tried creating new accounts, I've tried using alternate computers - but
whenever I sign in and use my own contact list, they are always offline.

Then I created a new account and tried to add people to my new contact list
- and the message never was sent to them - and they appeared offline just
like with the account before it.

Ive been trying non stop with every fix imagineable and none of them have
worked. Can someone please point me in a direction that will actually do
something?

I'd be greatful. Thanks in advance.

I tried all the 'fixes' I've seen posted on the newsgroups.. and now I'm
getting error code: 8004882c .. Once I click 'retry', I'm stuck on sign-in
forever
