Problem opening zip files

For a short time I had installed pkzip. It is now uninstalled, but
apparantly has left Windows Explorer as the program used to open zip files.
When I click on a zip file, Windows explorer opens, closes, opens, closes ad
infinitum. Only recourse is to force a reboot.

I would like to change the default opens with ... to something that works.
I see that on my XP computer the recommended program for opening zip files is
called "Compressed (zip) Folders". I can't find such a program on Vista.
Also, the only recommended program showing up on Vista "Open With" is Windows
Explorer, which I know is a disaster.

I can right-click and select Extract All to work around this problem, but
would like to get the Open function working correctly.

Help appreciated.

Hi Dickey,

You might try this tutorial to restore the default built-in ZIP handler
in Vista to see if it will help you.

Well, install a zip application like WinRAR (free) and set it to the default
program to open a zip file, otherwise, it's going to open with WE if
something else is not there in the list. My list to choose from is IE,
WinRAR and Winzip with WinRAR being the default used to open a zip file.
Without either one of the zip programs there, it was going to IE on my
machine and Vista went into the shake, rattle and roll too.

When I run regsvr32 zipfldr.dll I get error message:

The module "zipfldr.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer
was not found. Whoopee.

Did you right click on the Command Prompt shortcut and select "Run as
Administrator" (an Elevated Command Prompt) first?
