On on Server 2003 Standard file server, we have several queued HP DeskJet
5650 printers. They are attached to HP JetDirect 170X print servers via
Ethernet to switches. The add printer wizard successfully finds the
JetDirect boxes (which have IP addresses hard-coded in to them.) When I go
to install the drivers, there aren't any that are actually listed, I've used
the latest XP drivers from HP's website. While setting up the queue
information (such as the shared name, etc.), I also install the Windows 98
drivers for the queue on the file server.
Then, on both Windows XP and 98 machines, I add the printer in using the
\\server\queuename routine. The Windows 98 machines work flawlessly.
However, usually after a few days (even weeks), the XP machines stop working.
Even when you send a job to the queue, you don't see it being added when
sending an XP job, but you do see it being added when sending an 98 job.
It's as though it's totally vanishing in to thin air. If you reboot the file
server, then the XP machines start working again (and the 98 machines
continue to work).
I've looked and none of the queue settings both on the XP machines are
changed. If I tell the queue on the file server to print directly to the
printer instead of waiting until the last page is sent, the job shows up in
the queue and sometimes it successfully prints, but sometimes not.
Any idea what I am doing wrong? Is this some kind of a driver issue since
there aren't truly Server 2003 drivers for this printer?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
