Problem with reliability when "launching" a Messenger voice chat . . .
Greetings all,
Using Messenger 6.0 on my Windows 2000 Pro box, I'm having trouble getting
voice chat to reliably startup.
When attempting to start a voice chat, Messenger will (much of the time) not
establish a 2-way conversation - most of the time just a one-way channel
gets established. (And even rarely a no-way.) I have learned to watch the
sound "thermometers" and can tell at a glance if the 2-way link is in fact
established. If not, I have learned to immediately terminate the
conversation and do a retry. By doing so, I can always get it to work.
Sometimes this retry procedure takes a few more tries, but eventually the
2-way link is established and it all works great. I am so use to doing these
multiple retries that they are becoming routine.
I kind of think my problem has something to do with my Cisco 675 DSL
Modem/Router.
Additional information:
There are two users sharing this DSL modem and we are both running
Messenger. I don't know what would happen if the other computer was to try
voice chat because no headset is installed on that other machine. But, the
other machine does routinely use Messenger in normal text mode and has
experienced no problems.
Does anyone know anything about this problem?
If anyone else out there is experiencing this problem, I strongly recommend
that you try the "just keep retrying" method - which has worked pretty well
for me. Of course I would prefer to zero-in on the real cause and fix it.
Thanks all,
- Stan Shankman
